Attachapas / Spanish Skeletal Rigged Saddle, Civilian

Civilian & Military Spanish Saddle, skeletal rigged with skirts

This style of 'Spanish' Saddle was made from the mid 1830s through the 1860s. In the Victorian era any saddle with a horn was often referred to as a Spanish or Mexican saddle. It has a rawhide covered tree with heavy harness leather rigging and features a tooled rigging. It has a high pommel and horn. The saddle comes with standard wood stirrups, but Rawhide covered Oxbow stirrups are optional.

These saddles were very common and were produced from Florida to Missouri and to California. Before the War in the 1850s, Thornton Grimsley was making the Spanish Saddle in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1858 this saddle in black with the skirts (as shown on the right) became the U.S. Army wagon saddle.

In the future I will be adding a Mochila to this saddle, allowing for two different looks.

The girth and surcingle are added by default by the shopping cart, so these saddles are ready to ride. (Also available without the girth and surcingle.) NOTE: the surcingle is part of the engineering design of this saddle, although not absolutely necessary for use, it is a safety item and we DO HIGHLY recommend its use.

    Mexican Style Saddles:

Mexican Style Saddles with Mochila: These are usually skeletal rigged saddles, Depend on the time period and other issues, that can be attached (as in the example to the right) or just placed over the saddle as a cover.

Pony Express Saddle with Mochila: As there are no existing samples of a Pony Express saddle and mochila, there isn't one to copy. A copy was made in the 1920s or 1930s (dated as 1942 in another writeup) and is referred to as being made by the Wyrth Company in St. Joseph from a dissembled original. More recently others have made copies either from the Wyrth copy or from ?? writings / hearsay ??. I fell that all of them have anywhere from some to a lot of questional aspects. I am currently trying to gather all the pieces and then am going to try and put the puzzle together to come up with an accurate guess. Update: I think I have settled on a design that I am going to use. Finializing things now.

Additional information on these style of saddle is coming.
